3D printing in plant-based PLA — sculptural forms, printed only when they're ordered.

The Material

Every lamp is 3D-printed in plant-based PLA — made only when it's ordered, then hand-assembled and individually inspected.

The Method

built layer by layer

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a cutting-edge process that creates objects layer by layer from a digital model — no moulds, no minimums, and only the material the piece actually needs.

The Craft

crafted to our design

At Elden Designs, we harness the power of 3D printing to craft unique and stylish table lamps. Our process begins with a carefully designed 3D model, which is then transformed into a real object using our high-precision 3D printers. This allows us to create intricate patterns, organic shapes, and customized designs that are difficult to achieve with traditional manufacturing techniques.

The Material

polylactic acid

We print in PLA (polylactic acid), a thermoplastic typically made from plant starches such as corn or sugarcane rather than petroleum. It's one of the most widely used materials in 3D printing thanks to its precision, ease of use and the smooth, matte finish it gives our lamps.

Why PLA

a material that starts with plants

Plant-based

PLA is typically made from plant starches such as corn or sugarcane, rather than from petroleum.

Durable & Lightweight

Despite being lightweight, PLA is strong and durable, ensuring that our lamps maintain their structure over time.

Aesthetic & Versatile

PLA allows for a wide range of finishes, textures, and colors, giving our lamps a modern and stylish look.

Made to Order

Nothing is printed until you order it, so there's no overproduction and no unsold stock sitting in a warehouse.

The Process

how it’s made

  1. 01

    design

    Digital design

Each form is refined into a print-ready 3D model — every curve considered before a single layer is laid down.

  2. 02

    print

    Printed to order

Built layer by layer in plant-based PLA, in-studio and on demand — so nothing sits unsold in a warehouse.

  3. 03

    assemble

    Hand-assembled

Wired and assembled by hand, then fitted with its warm, low-energy light.

  4. 04

    inspect

    Checked & packed

Individually inspected and carefully packed, ready for its new home.

Good to know

Every lamp is 3D-printed in questions

Everything about the material and how your lamp is made — and if it’s not here, just ask.

Yes — PLA is rigid and hard-wearing, and our lamps are built to live with you for years. Keep them out of prolonged high heat (a hot car dashboard, say) and they’ll hold their form beautifully.

No. PLA is made from plant sources rather than petroleum, but it only breaks down in industrial composting facilities, and our lamps are not certified compostable — they also contain wiring and a lamp holder. If you ever want to part with a lamp, get in touch and we'll help.

PLA takes a wide range of textures and colours. Each lamp comes in a curated set of finishes — pick your colourway on the product page, or commission something bespoke in the Studio.

Because every piece is printed on demand rather than pulled from a warehouse, allow a short lead time before dispatch. You’ll find the current estimate on each product page.

The Future

the future of 3d-printed light

As technology advances, 3D printing continues to change the way products are designed and made. It lets us produce sculptural forms that would be difficult to make any other way, one piece at a time and only when they're ordered. At Elden Designs, we keep pushing the boundaries of what a lamp can look like.
